How to install GTA5 mods: three ways compared

One-click install in the client, manual extraction, or a mod pack — how they differ and which one to pick.

There are only three ways to install GTA5 mods: one-click in the client, manual extraction, or a mod pack. Most players never need anything but the first one.

1. One-click in the client (recommended)

  1. Install GTAV Mod Manager, sign in and switch to your edition (Enhanced / Legacy)
  2. Install the required components first (the environment pack) — the client checks this for you
  3. Pick a mod in the Mod Market and press One-click install
  4. The status island shows download → prepare → write → verify, then you can start the game

It handles prerequisites, registers dlclist entries and verifies the result — and uninstalling cleans up symmetrically.

2. Manual installation

OpenIV / CodeWalker, extracting to the right folders, editing dlclist, installing ScriptHookV and SHVDN — many steps, easy to get wrong. Only worth it for authoring or for packages the client has not adapted yet.

3. Mod packs

Convenient, but conflicts are common, individual mods cannot be removed, and updates get messy.

Four traps

  • Wrong edition: Enhanced and Legacy are separate environments; mods are not interchangeable
  • Missing prerequisites: script mods need SHVDN, map mods need the environment pack
  • Installing while the game is running
  • Loading an old save right after installing
